Forces in action!

During science, Year 5 have been busy thinking about the concept of gravity, mass and weight. It was quite challenging to understand weight as a force that is measured in newtons and mass as the amount of ‘stuff’ inside something, measured in kilograms. Did you know that if we travelled to the moon, our mass would stay the same but our weight would change? You can find out more about this here:

To help us understand the tricky concept of weight and gravity, we carried out a scientific investigation where we used force meters to estimate and measure the weight of classroom objects. Our maths came in handy when we had to practise reading different newton scales, which included those decimal numbers!

Next session in science, we will be thinking about unbalanced and balanced forces.
