Teaching and Achievement

High Expectations

At Torriano we measure success in many different ways and we believe that children must be nurtured to encourage achievement. We want our children to grow in confidence; a quality that is essential to accomplishment in life. We hope our children will leave us to become valued citizens of the future. We offer outstanding teaching coupled with a caring atmosphere. The curriculum offers rich experiences and the staff are committed and reflective learners too. We strive for excellence in our teaching by setting ourselves standards and goals to aspire to in our School Improvement Plan, which is reviewed every year. The school regularly hosts national and international visitors and many of the staff share their expertise at local and national level.

Teaching and Innovation

We have developed our own pedagogy and whole school meta-language to support the teaching of reading, writing and mental maths at Torriano. Continuity of dialogue and practice contributes to the high achievement and attainment in the school. Innovative use of ICT to support teaching and learning is a core focus for school improvement and reflects the forward thinking culture of the school. The school has acquired Level 2 Right Respecting School Status, The Achievement For All Quality Mark, Silver Eco Schools award and Artsmark Gold award through the experiences offered to our  children. Our national attainment levels are consistently higher than local and national averages and two consecutive Ofsted inspections have rated us an “Outstanding” school. The school Ofsted reports, current performance data and Teaching and Learning policy are available on the website.

All staff will challenge and extend pupils through inspirational teaching and high expectations.

“They are very well prepared for their future economic well being. High expectations and a supportive environment are crucial to this success, and they are a potent mix.”
