Torriano Primary School aims to serve its community by providing education of the highest quality. We aspire to develop the school as a focal point, working with local people to improve not only the children’s lives, but those of their parents and carers, friends and siblings too. We aim to develop a community of learners where continued access to education and knowledge is a right; learning is a recognised achievement and a life long process.
The Gatehouse, our performing arts building, has been developed with the support of the whole school community. This new space inspires and enriches the lives of our children and their families by providing a place for creative expression and coming together. It hosts cultural performances and curriculum workshops for all, providing a positive learning and sharing environment.
Our School-Home Support Worker works closely with parents and provides information on family learning, training opportunities, employment and parent advice. She ensures that all families have access to a range of services and learning opportunities on offer.
Aside from being a focal point for gatherings in the neighbourhood, the school aims to contribute to the wider community in other ways. For example we organise food collections at the time of Harvest Festival and our playground is available after school for families. Our annual Careers Week is organised by the year 6 pupils and enables parents and local citizens to share their expertise and career paths to help raise aspirations in all our children.
The school works closely with charities that promote active citizenship such as Team London where the children and parents are encouraged to organise and participate in campaigns to support local community issues. The children have raised awareness on local issues which concern them including homelessness amongst the young, access for disabled and senior citizens. There is a sense of community and responsibility at Torriano and our children are encouraged to be active and informed citizens, who look to their local community and beyond to develop a positive future for all. Children in our school hold a variety of roles that help them make a contribution to our community. These include:
- Rights Respecting Councillors
- Take Over Day Champions
- Sustainability Champions
- Food Waste Champions
- Career Kids
- Playground buddies
