Nursery

At Torriano we believe every child is unique, with questions and ideas about the world. We seek to develop and enrich these ideas within an environment that nurtures, supports and challenges young children.

We aim to ensure that all children thrive through carefully planned opportunities and experiences which focus on building knowledgeable learners, confident communicators and active citizens. Our aim is to give the children the best possible start to their journey through school, whilst establishing positive partnerships with both the children and their families.

Our creative curriculum reflects our diverse community and, through opportunities to play and explore, establishes the foundations of the children to become life-long learners. In Early Years, positive behaviour is reinforced and celebrated through our school values; caring, respectful and curious. As a Gold Rights Respecting School, our youngest children begin on their journey to becoming global citizens and will build on this as they move through the school.

Developing the whole child is a key priority and we use The Characteristics of Effective Teaching and Learning to reflect on how our children learn and subsequently support them to approach their learning in different ways. We have high aspirations for our learners. Our skilled practitioners carefully plan and teach through a range of focused, adult led and independent activities. Learning through play forms an essential part of our practice and allows the children to embed their learning and follow their own interests, whilst fostering social interactions. The 17 Areas of Learning within Development Matters form the basis of our innovative curriculum.

To bring learning to life, the children in Nursery begin to meet some of the ‘Torriano Detective Agency’ which supports them with their early reading, phonics, writing (mark making) and numeracy skills. In the nursery, children follow the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised ‘Foundations for Phonics’ guidance. The focus is on daily oral blending and language development through high quality stories and rhymes. This is in line with the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds whole school approach.

With Oracy at the core of our whole-school curriculum, Early Communication and Language is a priority in the Early Years and forms the foundation across all of the children’s learning.

Our enabling environment is well resourced and built each year in collaboration with the children. The recently re-developed EYFS outside area is the legacy of previous cohorts and is the outcome of collaboration with industry experts and the wider Kentish Town community. We continually innovate and reflect our own practice to meet the ever-changing needs of our children.
